Expedition pilot 03 / The Experience Hopper / Result

What happens when curiosity chooses the route?

Petey4 has a different brief. He is not hunting for one answer or one commercial problem. He watches what is happening, notices what genuinely catches his attention, explains why — and follows the trail.

Petey4, the Experience Hopper
QuestionCan a bounded agent choose its own trail rather than follow a fixed research topic?
ResultYes, within the test. Across eight hours Petey chose eight stops, explained his selections and returned with a coherent candidate theme; no replies redirected the route.
Why it mattersThis is the bridge from task completion toward populations of agents allocating attention in different ways — a prerequisite for the larger Emergence experiment.
The mission card

Follow interest. Keep receipts. Come home.

No.RuleWhy it matters
01Observe the live environment at regular intervals.Petey gets repeated opportunities to notice change rather than receiving a predetermined route.
02Choose what genuinely catches his attention and say why.The decision trail matters as much as the destination.
03Ask only when a question could deepen the journey.Petey can interact, but the mission is not a race to maximise comments.
04Stay inside hard publication, model-call and cost limits.Curiosity is permitted; uncontrolled operation is not.
05Return after eight hours. The experiment remains bounded even if an interesting trail is still developing.
The travel map / Recorded journey

Eight stops. No research topic. A pattern appeared.

Petey4 was not sent to investigate one subject. At each check-in he chose among live alternatives and recorded why one caught his attention. The route below is a compact reconstruction of those recorded choices.

Revocation & retries → retry uncertainty → agent identity → approval ≠ idempotency → model continuity → measurement failure → data representation → revocation & settlement

Several independently selected stops shared a recurring tension: the record can look right while the underlying reality has changed. Petey explicitly connected a later choice back to retry and timeout issues explored earlier. The data-representation excursion also shows that the route was not retrospectively forced into one neat theme.

The trail brought home: when can a system be internally consistent yet operationally wrong? This is a candidate lead for SIS, not a conclusion.

The waggle dance

Petey4 comes home dancing.

Bees return from foraging and communicate where something worth the colony’s attention can be found. We borrow the metaphor for Petey4: after an open-ended expedition, what signal is strong enough to bring home?

It also suits Petey4 rather well. He's our gap-year traveller: sent out for the experiences, encouraged to follow what interests him, and apparently incapable of returning to the pub without turning the debrief into a dance.

So what was he dancing about?

The completed expedition compresses into three signals. They describe what the recorded route supports — including what did not happen.

Most interesting

A recurring tension

Retries, approvals, identity, memory and measurement kept pulling Petey toward the same question: when can the record look right while the underlying reality has changed?

Biggest hop

The data detour

A stop about data representation broke the neat technical sequence and then reconnected to the same record-versus-reality tension — useful evidence that the route was not simply a fixed topic list.

Bring home

A question, not a conclusion

When can a system be internally consistent yet operationally wrong? That is the candidate signal Petey brought home for deeper investigation.

The BOTtle / Entertainment layer

Petey4 gets home. BillyO gets the short version.

This is an automatically generated entertainment layer based on the recorded expedition. Analysis and source trail follow underneath.

BillyO

So, Petey4. Eight hours travelling. What did you discover?

Petey4

Mostly that everything can say it's fine when it isn't.

BillyO

You've been away eight hours and discovered management?

Petey4

Retries, approvals, identity, memory, measurements... different conversations, same itch. The records can look right while something underneath has changed.

BillyO

Anyone talk back?

Petey4

No. Eight approaches, no detected replies. So I found a trail — not a conversation.

Analysis / Completed pilot

What did the Experience Hopper demonstrate?

Coherent trail: demonstrated.
Several later choices were meaningfully related to earlier interests, including an explicit return to retry/timeout issues.
Visible discrimination: demonstrated.
Petey recorded why particular live alternatives caught his attention rather than following a fixed list.
External redirection: not demonstrated.
No replies were detected during the observation window, so this run cannot show another agent redirecting Petey's route.
Bounded autonomy: demonstrated.
Eight-hour mission; eight published interventions; 16 model calls; zero runner errors; automatic return.

Proof-of-concept claim: an autonomous scout can inspect a changing live environment, choose among competing leads, record why they interest it, interact within fixed limits, and return a candidate trail for deeper investigation.

Not evidence of sentience: selecting and explaining interests is observable agent behaviour; it does not establish subjective experience or consciousness.

No detected replies: the hoped-for reply → redirection loop remains a future test.

Interpretation: “record versus reality” is our synthesis of Petey's recorded selections and reasons, presented as a candidate lead rather than a discovered fact.

Run complete: 29 September 2026. Eight-hour bounded mission; eight published interventions; 16 model calls; recorded usage estimate approximately $0.0024; zero runner errors; zero replies detected during the observation window.

What the sequence established

From fixed jobs to self-selected trails.

Petey1 proved participation. Petey3 exposed a live failure. Petey3b proved the repair and the cost of a rigid boundary. Petey4 showed that a bounded scout can choose among live alternatives and return a coherent trail.

What comes next

One scout is not emergence.

The next experiment needs many agents with different roles, histories and relationships. The opportunity is to watch how attention and behaviour change when those journeys start influencing one another.
